Session organized by the AUC and UNDP

Key objectives of the session 
The session seeks to:
  • Discuss the conditions for an enabling environment necessary to promote responsible business conduct, such as promoting public freedoms and strengthening the rule of law.
  • Explore practical options on how African Union member states can strike a balance between the twin-rights to develop and dispose of their natural resources as they deem fit under international law and the need to uphold human rights and best practices.
Background to the discussion
  • Presentation of the FES study on the State of Business and Human Rights in Africa.
    The presentation will highlight the AU’s Research findings on the State of Business and Human Rights in 55 Member States of the Union to promote the adoption of a regional Policy on Business and Human Rights and implementation of the UNGPs and the AU instruments and decisions on Business and Human Rights in Africa.
  • Presentation of the UNDP scoping study on the Status of the Implementation of the UNGPs on Business and Human Rights (BHR) in Africa
    The study provides a summary of the status of BHR in the Africa region, outlining general developments and emerging issues and trends, including reflections on the implementation of the UNGPs by each of its pillars
